大分県・国東半島の先端、向田海水浴場。
かつて海の家だった場所に、静かに佇むお店「海辺と珈琲ことり」
県外からも訪れる人が多いこのカフェの店主 多田羅孝太郎さん。

大分県・国東半島には山城の工場がある。
月に3〜4回訪れる三代目にとっても「海辺と珈琲ことり」は、とっておきの場所だ。

Mukata Beach at the tip of Kunisaki Peninsula, Oita Prefecture.
The store, “Umibe to Coffee Kotori,” stands quietly in what used to be a beach house.
The owner of this cafe, which attracts many visitors from outside the prefecture, is Kotaro Tatara.

Yamashiro’s factory is located on the Kunisaki Peninsula in Oita Prefecture.
For the third generation who visits three to four times a month, “Umibe to Coffee Kotori” is a very special place.

優しく吹き抜ける海風に導かれるように出会ったこの場所。

「妻と散歩をしているとき、見つけたんです」

近くに住まいを持つ、多田羅さん夫妻が散歩コースで見つけたのは、海の家の名残だった。

「誘われるように建物の前に立ち、そっと忍び込みました」

I came across this place as if guided by a gentle sea breeze.

My wife and I found it when we were taking a walk.

Mr. and Mrs. Tatara, who live nearby, found the remnants of a beach house on their walking course.

We stood in front of the building and quietly crept in.

外から見る景色と、建物の中から見る景色は、驚くほどに違った。

「ここで、何か始めたい。そう思ったらすぐに体が動いていて、その日のうちに、この建物を借りれないかと相談に行っていました」

そこから時間をかけて、奥様と一緒に手を加え、2013年4月にオープン。
奥様の大好きな古道具と、ご主人が好きな珈琲の香りに囲まれるお店が生まれた。

The view from outside and the view from inside the building were remarkably different.

I wanted to start something here. As soon as I felt that way, my body was moving, and that very day I went to see if I could rent the building.”

From there, he and his wife took the time to modify the building, opening it in April 2013.

三代目との出会いを通じて、多田羅さんは山城の服を知った。
心地よい海風を体全体で感じることができる山城のシャツは、この場所で働く多田羅さんにとって、最高の着心地を届けてくれた。

Through his encounter with the third generation, Mr. Tatara came to know Yamashiro’s clothing.
Yamashiro’s shirts, which allow one to feel the pleasant sea breeze throughout the body, provided the best comfort for Mr. Tadara, who works at this location.

流れる音楽に耳を傾け、心地よい時間を浮遊するように、ゆったりと過ごす最高のひととき。どこからともなく漂う珈琲の豊かな薫り。

Listening to the music, you will have the best time to relax and enjoy the comfortable time floating around.
The rich aroma of coffee drifting in from nowhere.

自家焙煎を始めたのは、オープンから約一年後。
あとからじんわりと思いだすような、そんな一杯の珈琲に魅了され、訪れる人は少しずつ増えていく。

About a year after opening, they began roasting their own coffee.
The number of visitors has gradually increased, attracted by the cup of coffee that reminds them of their own memories.

多田羅さんが大好きなレコードが、時を刻むように音楽を奏でている。
都会では決して味わうことができない異空間とも言える心地よさ。
「ひとやすみ」という言葉の意味を改めて感じ入るようなそんな心地よさだ。

Mr. Tatara’s favorite records are playing music as if ticking away the time.
It is a comfortable atmosphere that can be described as a different kind of space that cannot be experienced in the city.
It is the kind of comfort that makes you feel the meaning of the word “break” all over again.

「オープン当初は週末だけ営業していたけれど、少しずつ一歩ずつ広げていきました」

好きなものに囲まれる空間の心地よさは、人と人を繋げ、土地と人を繋げていく。

When we first opened, we were only open on weekends, but little by little, step by step, we expanded.”

The comfort of a space surrounded by one’s favorite things connects people to each other and to the land.

「都会では決してあり得ない、不活性な場所に明かりを灯すように、新しい何かを生み出し、広げていけることを目指したいんです」

「何よりも一番大切にしていることは、自分が行きたくなるお店かどうかです」

I want to create and expand something new, like turning on a light in an inconvenient place, which is not possible in the city.

The most important thing above all else is whether or not it is a place that I would want to go to.

「毎日400円を払ってでも行きたいお店になっているだろうか」

多田羅さんの自問自答は続いていく。
果てしなく続く海のように。

それでも、おおらかな海は今日も、人々を受け止め優しい時を届けてくれる。

Is it a restaurant I would pay 400 yen every day to go to?

Mr. Tatara continues to ask himself this question.
Like the endless sea.

Still, the generous sea continues to welcome people and bring them gentle moments.

一杯の珈琲がもたらす豊かな時間。
時間ごとに違う景色を見せてくれるこの場所で、多田羅さんの「好きなもの」に魅了される人々。

A cup of coffee brings a rich time.
People are fascinated by Tatara’s “favorite things” at this place that shows a different view every hour.

小鳥のさえずりのようにさり気なく。
押しつけがましくない優しいひととき。

疲れた時、時間ができた時、大切な人と、大好きな友達と、愛する家族と、それぞれが求める「ひとやすみ」を求めて、今日も誰かが訪れる。

Casually, like the chirping of birds.
A gentle moment that is not intrusive.

Whenever you are tired, when you have time, with your loved ones, with your favorite friends, with your beloved family members, someone comes to visit you today, seeking a “break” that each of you is seeking.

国東の海のようにおおらかな多田羅さんの空間に、そっと静かに海風が入ってきた。

A sea breeze gently and quietly entered Tatara’s space, which is as generous as the sea in Kunisaki.
