2022年、年が明けて少し遅い初詣へと出かける。京都の冬は寒い。京都人風に言うと「底冷え」というやつだ。
足元から冷え込む京都の冬には、温かなパンツが必須アイテム。化学繊維のインナータイツを履かなくても、内側は綿素材の起毛だから、素肌に触れるほどに心地よい温もりが広がっていく。

In 2022, a little late in the year, I went out for a little late Hatsumode (New Year’s visit to a shrine). Winter in Kyoto is cold. In Kyoto people’s words, it is “chilly from the bottom up.
Warm pants are a must in winter in Kyoto, when it gets cold from the feet up. Even if  you do not wear inner tights made of chemical fiber, the comfortable warmth spreads as it touches bare skin, because the inside is made of raised cotton material.

表生地はコーデュロイで見た目の温かさはもちろん、寒さから守ってくれるのが嬉しい。

The outer fabric is corduroy, which not only looks warm but also protects you from the cold.

京都洛北にある今宮神社には、何百年も前から変わることなく、訪れる人々を優しく美味しく迎えてくれる門前スイーツ「あぶり餅」が有名だ。

今宮神社境内で、「かざりや」「一和」の餅菓子「あぶり餅」は、細い竹串に、親指ほどの大きさの小さなお餅をこんがり焼いて、まったりと味わい深い白味噌のタレがかかった歴史ある逸品。

京都人には、贔屓のお店があり、ほとんどが子供の頃から祖父や祖母に連れられて、どちらかのお店に訪れている。「うちはかざりやさん、私は一和さん」みたいな感じだ。

Imamiya Shrine in Rakuhoku, Kyoto, is famous for its “aburi mochi,” a sweet that has remained unchanged for hundreds of years, gently and deliciously welcoming visitors to the shrine.

Aburi Mochi” is a historic delicacy made by Kazariya and Ichiwa, both located within the district of Imamiya Shrine, and consists of a small rice cake the size of a thumb, roasted on a thin bamboo skewer and covered with a rich and flavorful white miso sauce.

Most Kyoto people have a favorite store, and most of them have been visiting one or the other since they were children, taken by their grandfathers or grandmothers. Most of them have been taking their grandparents to one of their favorite restaurants since they were children.It’s like, “My family is Kazariya-san, I am Ichiwa-san.”

ほどよいテーパードのこのパンツは、スタイルの美しさだけでなく、歩きやすさも魅力の一つ。石畳の道をゆったりと進めば、あぶり餅の焼ける香ばしい香りに包まれて、ふわりふわりと店先へと導かれるようだ。

趣のある店舗は、まるでタイムスリップしたような不思議な感覚。一歩踏み入れば、歴史上の人物に会えるような気にもなるから、京都はやはり奥が深い。

The atmospheric stores are like stepping back in time. Once you step inside, you will feel as if you are meeting a historical figure, that is why Kyoto is such a profound city.

上着を脱いで腰掛ける。防寒用につけてきたスヌードはモダンな雰囲気で、高層ビルが立ち並ぶ都会にも、歴史ある建造物に囲まれた古都の雰囲気にも自然と馴染む美しいムラ染め。柿渋と墨染の繊細さがお気に入り。

ダブルガーゼ素材は、柔らかく温かい。この水墨画のようなニュアンスのスヌードは、我ながら、歴史ある店にぴったりだと嬉しくなる。おしゃれはさり気なく、場所の雰囲気にも合わせるのが大切。

I take off my jacket and sit down. The Snood I put on for protection against the cold has a modern look, and the beautiful uneven dyeing naturally blends in with the atmosphere of both the city with its skyscrapers and the ancient city surrounded by historic buildings. We love the delicacy of the persimmon tannin and sumi-zome.

The double gauze material is soft and warm. This snood with ink painting-like nuances makes me, myself, happy that it fits perfectly with the historic store. Fashion should be casual and match the atmosphere of the place.

座ればすぐに運ばれてくるお茶。急須から注げば、ふわっと湯気が立ち、両手で包み込むように、温もりを独り占め。ぼんやりと、あぶり餅が焼けるのを待つとしよう。

Tea is served as soon as you sit down. Pouring the tea from the teapot, you can enjoy the warmth of the tea all to yourself as you wrap your hands around the tea. I will wait idly for the aburi-mochi to be baked.

ほどよいゆったり感のコーデュロイパンツは、おしゃれだけでなく実用性も兼ね備えているのが良い。座ればより裏側の起毛生地が肌に触れ、ゆっくりと温もりが行き渡るのを感じる。ベージュと黒の２種類あったが、悩んだ末に黒をチョイス。お気に入りのNewBalanceのスニーカーに合わせたかったのと、どんな装いにもしっくりとくる自信があったから。

The moderately loose-fitting Corduroy pants are not only fashionable but also practical. If you sit down, the raised fabric on the back side touches your skin more, and you can feel the warmth slowly spreading over your body. There were two types, Beige and black, but after much deliberation, I chose Black. I wanted to match them with my favorite NewBalance sneakers, and I was confident that they would go well with any outfit.

運ばれてきたあぶり餅は、一口サイズでありながら、奥深い味わいが広がる。また一つ、また一つと口に運ぶたび、受け継がれてきたこの味わいの虜になっていく。

The Aburi Mochi is a bite-sized rice cake with a deep flavor. As you take another bite, you will be captivated by the taste that has been passed down from generation to generation.

歴史上の人物も口にしたのだろうか。白味噌の優しく甘いタレ、焦げ目のついた香ばしさ。シンプルであるからこその魅力は、スイーツもおしゃれも最高のご褒美であると確信する。

I wonder if historical figures had also tasted it. The gently sweet sauce of white miso paste, the charred aroma. The simplicity of the dish is what makes it so appealing, and I am convinced that it is the best reward for both sweets and fashion.

美味しいものに出会えば、誰かに伝えたくなるものだ。妻ともこの喜びを味わいたくて、思わずお土産を注文する。

When you come across something delicious, you want to tell someone about it. I want to share this joy with my wife, so I order some souvenirs without a second thought.

「ご馳走さま」と、軽く手を合わせて、立ち上がる。名残惜しくもあるが、この名残惜しさこそ、小さな旅の魅力でもあるのだ。石畳の道を進む頃には、妻の喜ぶ顔が楽しみになってきた。

I say, “Thank you for the food,” lightly clasping my hands together, and get up. I regret the last bit of the trip, but this regret is the charm of a small trip. By the time we continue down the cobblestone road, I am looking forward to seeing my wife’s happy face.
