The third installment of “Craftsman’s Handiwork” is brought to you by Mr. Shimoda, a new staff member in charge of the Yamashiro to Hitozuna column! I am not sure if I will be able to convey what I have learned to you as I still have a lot to learn, but thank you in advance for your cooperation.<\/p>\n

For our first interview, we talked to Mr. Yoshiyuki Kawashima of Kawashima Orifu, the company that produces the fabric for Yamashiro, and he told us about some of the things that he found interesting and surprising. I would like to share with you some of the things that made me think “I see” and some things that surprised me!<\/p>\n

– Takashima Chijimi – Inherited from the Edo Period-\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Shimoda: Let’s begin by asking when this factory was established?<\/p>\n

Kawashima: Since 1915 (Taisho 4), I guess.<\/p>\n

Shimoda: Roughly 100 years! Wow!
\nHave you always operated here in Takashima?<\/p>\n

Kawashima : That’s right. It is a good place for textiles, and the subsoil water of the Azumi River, which flows into Lake Biwa, comes up as well water, and water is important for textiles.<\/p>\n

Shimoda:\u00a0 I see! So there is an abundance of water.<\/p>\n

Kawashima:\u00a0 There are many textile production areas throughout Japan, but the areas where chijimi fabric is produced are usually rich in water.<\/p>\n

Shimoda: So it has something to do with the fact that the material absorbs moisture well. I had never been aware of this before, so it is a new discovery for me.<\/p>\n

Shimoda: What is the point of fabric? What is chijimi anyway?<\/p>\n

Kawashima: One of the key features of Takashima-Chijimi is the process of twisting the weft yarn, and the number of times this is done is finely adjusted depending on the product. This gives the fabric subtle nuances.<\/p>\n

Shimoda: I see.
\nThat twisting is a characteristic of Takashima chijimi, isn’t it?
\nIt is a fabric using twisted threads! When did this begin?<\/p>\n

Kawashima: Since the Edo period.<\/p>\n

Shimoda: Hee~! So you have been making “Takashima de chijimi” since the Edo period. I feel the weight of the tradition that has been handed down from the Edo period to the present day.<\/p>\n

– I want to stick to natural materials after all- <\/strong><\/p>\n

Shimoda: What are some of the challenges you face?<\/p>\n

Kawashima: Yarn is an agricultural product, so its quality varies slightly depending on the year it is harvested. Therefore, in Japan, there is a high demand for uniform products, and we are having a hard time getting close to that demand.<\/p>\n

Shimoda: I see. So there is a process to fill in the differences in materials from year to year.
\nIs this fabric especially good for summer?<\/p>\n

\n\u5929\u7136\u7d20\u6750\u3060\u304b\u3089\u6469\u64e6\u304c\u8d77\u304d\u3066\u3082\u304b\u3086\u304f\u306a\u3089\u306a\u3044\u3063\u3066\u3044\u3046\u306e\u3082\u826f\u3044\u3067\u3059\u3088\u306d\u3002<\/p>\n

Kawashima:\u00a0 That’s right. Crepe underwear has an uneven surface that allows air to pass through, making it easy to absorb sweat and is recommended for summer, but it is also useful in winter.<\/p>\n

The bumpy surface creates a layer of air, so when you put something warm on it, it also has a heat-retaining effect.<\/p>\n

Shimoda: I see! It is good to be able to wear it comfortably all year round.
\nIt’s also good that it’s a natural material so it doesn’t itch even if it causes friction.<\/p>\n
