\nWe would like to talk further with Mr. Yasumasa Shigeno, a traditional craftsman of Kyo Shikanoko Shibori.<\/p>\n

Yamashiro: Mr. Shigeno’s dyeing techniques and colors are so beautiful that I can’t help but be captivated by them… How can you manipulate colors so skillfully?<\/p>\n

Shigeno: I don’t consider myself to have a good sense of color… (smiles)<\/p>\n

Yamashiro: It’s the best of the best! There is a depth to the colors, not just two colors, but a sense of unity even though they are mixed together… It’s strange for me to say this, but I feel your dyeing is very elegant.<\/p>\n

Shigeno: Well, I certainly try to use beautiful colors. I always try to use vivid colors, not so much gray or brown.<\/p>\n

Yamashiro: How did this influence your work?<\/p>\n

Shigeno: When I was in Los Angeles, I saw brightly colored cityscapes all the time, and that was probably a big factor.<\/p>\n

Yamashiro: What? Los Angeles!?<\/p>\n

Shigeno: After graduating from an art university in Kyoto, I went to a design school in L.A. while helping out at an architectural design firm.
\nI was actually in charge of design, but perhaps because of L.A.’s mild climate and proximity to the ocean, there were many innovative color schemes there, and I remember that dark-colored designs were not adopted very often.<\/p>\n

\nIt is true that your color scheme is a bit different from the Japanese-style aperture.<\/p>\n

Shigeno: The Japanese climate tends to be rainy and cloudy, so colors tend to be subdued, but I don’t want to use too many dark colors.<\/p>\n

\u30fc\u30fc<\/span>Shigeno’s sense of color, it turns out, was cultivated far away on the West Coast of the United States\u30fc\u30fc<\/span><\/p>\n

Yamashiro: In terms of overseas, you have collaborated with some well-known foreign brands, haven’t you?<\/p>\n

Shigeno: Yes, I have collaborated with various brands. Since Japanese shibori is used to express detailed patterns, we receive many offers from overseas brands that want to create a delicate image.<\/p>\n

Yamashiro: What was the impetus for this?<\/p>\n

Shigeno: After I returned from Los Angeles, I was searching for a new type of tie-dyeing, and I met a friend through a friend in Los Angeles.
\nI met someone in Kyoto who was doing something interesting! I was like, “There is a guy in Kyoto who is doing something interesting!lol<\/p>\n

Yamashiro: So you are saying that foreign brands are also paying attention to tie-dyeing?<\/p>\n

Shigeno: There is no doubt about that. Even now, many brands are paying attention to the tie-dyeing technique, and it is said that even France is using tie-dyeing.<\/p>\n

Yamashiro: So Japanese techniques are spreading overseas as well?<\/p>\n

Shigeno: Yes. However, the environment is different, so the dyed products are slightly different from those dyed in Japan.
\nThe climate and water quality are completely different, which means that the dyes are dyed differently.<\/p>\n

Yamashiro: So you can only produce this texture and coloring in Japan?<\/p>\n

Shigeno: I have always wanted to incorporate the texture and color tones of shibori-dye into interior products. Lampshades, walls, and even bathrooms (laughs).<\/p>\n

Yamashiro: What do you mean by “walls”?<\/p>\n

Shigeno: I’m thinking of something like a partition made of dyed leather that would be attached to the walls with a snap and painted with glass.<\/p>\n

Yamashiro: Leather?<\/p>\n

Shigeno: With deerskin, there is a traditional technique called “Inden” that has been used since ancient times. Inden uses lacquer to create the pattern, but I also use dyes to express it in vivid colors.<\/p>\n

Yamashiro: But isn’t leather hard and difficult to dye?<\/p>\n

Shigeno: That’s the thing, leather is very easy to dye. Deer especially. The dye goes in easily, and I would say that there is almost no fading. So I think it is a very practical material.<\/p>\n
