\nThe store was run by a mild-mannered father and mother. As an elementary school student, I knew that my mother would make me do my homework when I got home, so I would throw my school bag into the men’s clothing store and go out to play every day.
\nWhenever I returned home after playing outside, my school bag was always at home, so I am sure they delivered it to me. From the menswear shop’s point of view, this was a nuisance, but I suppose it was also a good thing in the Showa era. However, what was noteworthy was the sons who lived there.
\nDuring the day, they beat drums so loudly that they echoed not only along Tominokoji but also as far as Sanjo, and at night they would go out with their friends in their noisy motorcycle, which in this day and age would be called a noise problem or a reserve army for anti-society.
\nHowever, I think the adults in the neighborhood would have just smiled and said, “That’s too noisy,” whether it was because they had a neighbor with a Mahican or because society as a whole was more relaxed and tolerant, or because these things were so commonplace.
